Journal 7 April 24 (Day 34) Today marks the halfway point in our production schedule, and our next to last day here in Ferndale. One can sense a mood of sadness among the locals as we approach our departure date of Thursday. ![]() The first scene, Sc. 125 -- Ext. Sheriffs Office: The townspeople drift away, is up first. Although Frank has commented in the past on the challenging eather here in Humboldt County, the cloud cover this morning is welcomed, as it matches that light captured on film a week ago when we completed Sc. 120-122 in the cemetery and the Town Hall Square. Filming commences about two hours after the 9:00 a.m. calltime. Frank and d.p. Tattersall have planned several camera angles for the crowd sequence before moving everyone a half-block to the Town Hall Square for Sc. 93 -- The war memorial is on display. After battling the elements all last week, the company has finally realized the chance to complete what promises to be one of the films most emotional moments. ![]() By the time filming begins on Sc. 93, it is already 2:30 p.m., with only about five hours of daylight left. Frank has planned eight shots for this sequence, which includes virtually every major character in the film (barring those actors who appear in the H.U.A.C. testimony scenes later in the story). That means a master shot plus coverage of all key players. After lunch (you may recall we always refer the midday meal break as lunch regardless of the hour at which it is consumed), we go back to a night exterior setup outside of The Majestic set, again to finish a scene that Frank started last week, Sc. 98 -- Ext. Majestic: Bob and Mabel out on a date. By the time wrap is called, the Witching Hour approaches, and our Wednesday calltime has been pushed back 1 1/2 hours to Noon. |
